I can't even take credit for this great combo of fabric, but I'll tell more about that when I do a full post on the quilt!
In the meanwhile,
I decided to take a wee break last night and make a little project just for myself. I've seen tutorials and pictures of steering wheel covers, which are super cute, they were just one layer of fabric, and didn't have the function I need. See, here in Arizona, our steering wheels can become searingly hot, especially if you're stuck parking somewhere that's uncovered. In fact we joke that you need potholders just to grab the wheel and drive.
*digs around in stash*
Hey! Lookie there! I have a whole bunch of Insul Bright that I bought for making potholders! I got to work making a cover that is layered with some Insul Bright, so that it could be cute AND functional! It was fast to sew up, but I think I need to refine the method a bit (to cover raw edges, etc). Once I've got it down, I'll post a tutorial, but here's the prototype!

| Pardon the hideous photo - taken with my iPhone, in my dark garage, at about 11 pm at night! LOL! |
We'll see how it does today... It's gonna be a scorcher!

I think that's genius!! I'd make one if it wasn't permanently cold and raining here :)
ReplyDeleteI would never have thought to make a steering wheel cover. How "cool" is that? :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! It's quite hot in the summer and unbelievably cold during the winter here in Manitoba. I could use one of those year round. Will be waiting for your tutorial :)
ReplyDeleteThat should keep the steering wheel cool!
ReplyDeletelove the wheel cover and as Lucy said we don't have the need here for them unfortunately due to the perma rain we are having! x
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea with the insul bright for the steering wheel cover! will be putting on my to do list. can't wait to see more of the baby quilt:)
ReplyDeleteHello, I'm dropping by from the WIP Wednesday link party.
ReplyDeleteThe fabrics for the baby quilt are so pretty. And I love the idea of a handmade steering wheel cover!
That steering wheel cover is genius. I may have to make one myself, now...
ReplyDeleteI need a steering wheel cover here in Pennsylvania lately with the heat wave (or what we think is a heat wave!) here! Yours looks great!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sneak peek! I would LOVE to see what you come up with for a steering wheel cover. We've been at 104 degrees for a few days now. Tomorrow will "only" be 100. :P
ReplyDeleteHmmm, can't wait for the tutorial. I have family down there in AZ and this might make the perfect Christmas gift!
ReplyDeleteI hope I don't miss your tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI'm from NM I'd loved to have that. I understand the reason to have pot holders in the car on a hot day. Can't wait for the tutorial
