Showing off my stash!

Now, I say "showing off" because, ostensibly, that's the whole point of Moda Bake Shop's Show off your Stash Linky Party.  However, the mere thought of creating this post makes me twitchy.  One of my many goals for this year is to get my stash (and entire sewing studio) organized and under control.  Let's just say that so far, I've been lacking...

One of the bright spots is that, some time ago, I did take some time to get my yardage folded up onto mini-bolts, using this tutorial from Smashed Peas and Carrots.  It was a bit tedious to get it all done, but I have to admit, it makes life so much easier when I just want to cut a strip or two from a bit in my stash.  I've managed, for the most part, to keep it all nicely organized and folded up...

Except for the newer pieces that have entered my stash.  I'm gearing up for a craft show in the fall, so I've been in heavy acquisition mode.  Sadly, this part of the stash is pretty poorly organized....

And let's not even talk about my scraps.  I have been doing a pretty decent job of keeping my scraps cut into standard bits - 2.5" strips, 2.5" squares, and 5" squares.  But since I've only been back into quilting for a year or so, it's a pretty meager stash.  And what there is, ain't that organized.

My cutting table acts as the main center of activity in my sewing studio.  It holds most of my notions, a nice roomy cutting mat (that my awesome hubbs got me for Christmas a year and a half ago), and usually a few projects that I'm in the middle of.

I've got my cutting table, sewing table, and ironing board set up in a nice little U shape, so that I can swivel around and access all three.

No ironing board?  Yeah, you kind of have to imagine that part.  I had to move it out this past weekend when I had a little issue with my iron.  But normally it's right next to the cutting table, up against the design wall.  My design wall is just a whole lotta flannel stapled up to the wall.  It works perfectly for holding up blocks, and with cheap flannel, I was able to cover nearly the whole wall, so I have lots of room to work.

This is sort of a wall of shame... I desperately need some sort of new organization and storage over here.  By the way, that lovely lady in the picture on the wall is my grandmother, Suzanne, who gave me my love of quilting long ago!

There are just a couple of additions I'd like to make before I consider my sewing studio complete... I'd really like another bookshelf-type unit to sit right behind my sewing table, so that larger quilts can have a little more support.  I also need to add a "shipping center" somewhere - a little table or something where I can store all my shipping materials and have enough space to actually wrap up and package things.

Let's just ignore the closet for the time being....

  1. I love seeing people's crafting spaces. Thanks for sharing yours. Great design wall. I will be moving my sewing room soon, and hope to have a large design wall like yours in my new space.

  3. I am a kindred spirit... check out my space at www.SusiesSunroom.blogspot.com I didn't have time to "pick up before company sees this", as I wanted to post on MBS right away. I don't have a good system for scraps or my bigger scraps for key fobs, and I hate to fold. But I can see you have a great space for sewing and creativity!
